 Select Mojave Preserve Facilities Closing

BARSTOW, CA – Due to the government shutdown, Mojave National Preserve will be closing the parking lot and area around the Historic Kelso Depot for health and safety concerns due to continuing issues with trash, vandalism, and resource damage.  This closure will be effective January 4, 2018 starting at 9:00 am, and will remain in effect for the duration of the government shutdown.

Visitor services are limited due to the lapse in federal appropriations. During the government shutdown, national parks are working to remain as open and accessible to the American people as possible.

All normal preserve rules and regulations still apply, and violators will be cited.  Off-road vehicle travel is illegal; vehicles must stay on established roadways in the preserve.  Camping must be in accordance with preserve regulations.

Visitors are encouraged to stop and use restroom facilities in nearby gateway communities as there are extremely limited restroom facilities within the preserve. Visitors are also encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles, and to pack in and pack out all waste.

Additional areas within Mojave National Preserve may close at any time for the health and safety of visitors.

Mojave National Preserve was established by the 1994 California Desert Protection Act.  The 1.6-million-acre preserve encompasses much of the Mojave Desert, as well a transitional elements of the Great Basin and Sonoran deserts.  Singing sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, Joshua tree forests, and carpets of wildflowers are all found at this preserve. A visit to its canyons, mountains and mesas will reveal long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. About half of the preserve is congressionally designated Wilderness.  Located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Mojave provides serenity and solitude from major metropolitan areas..
