LAUGHLIN CHAMBER RENAMES TOURISM AWARD FOR SHIRES

LAUGHLIN – A long-time champion of tourism in the Tri-State area will be honored with the naming of an award in his memory.  The Laughlin Chamber of Commerce will rename the annual Community Achievement Awards’ tourism category the “Lloyd Shires Tourism Award,” beginning next year.
Shires retired last year from a senior executive position with Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino.  He died shortly before this year’s CAAs, for which he was a previous winner.
“The Tri-State area lost a true champion of Laughlin and the surrounding communities,” said Chamber executive director Jackie Mazzeo.   “He was instrumental in the growth and prosperity of the entire region with his contributions towards local tourism.”
Shires helped launch the air program at Riverside Resort more than 15 years ago.  As a member of the Mohave County Airport Authority board of directors, he also worked diligently to return scheduled air service to the Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport while simultaneously expanding charter and scheduled charter flights to Laughlin/Bullhead City.  He kept a promise to be on the first American Airlines flight from here to Phoenix in February.  Shires’ passion for the Colorado River region was obvious to anyone who met him, second only to his love of baseball and his family.
The Chamber board voted unanimously to name the tourism award in Shires’ honor.  The first recipient will be awarded in October 2018.
