ARTICLE

The Laughlin River Show is happening February 14-16 at the Tropicana Resort and Casino, 2121 Riverview Drive.  Over $5,000,000.00 of rare coins, gold and silver, paper money, stamps, ancients, jewelry, diamonds, collectibles will be on display by over 35 exhibitors.

Domestic and global uncertainty and our country’s ever-growing national debt has created an increased interest by the general public in gold and silver prices and hard assets. Put this together with our aging population who is receiving inheritances and settling estates at a record pace and this adds up to new faces at local collectible coin and currency shows.  Whether attendees come to sell out, buy fine jewelry at wholesale prices, invest for the future or just to enjoy a fun and interesting family outing, many become interested in coins, paper money, tokens or stamps and decide to start a collection here.

Some people are exploring the sale and purchase of gold and silver coins. Silver coins are the most common coin found in “grandma’s attic,” from the popular Morgan silver dollar to dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 and before.  Silver dollars have a long and glorious history, with colorful stories from wild west to civil war and beginning with the founding of our country.

The 1804 Bust Dollar was recently displayed at the Las Vegas Numismatic Show and is valued at over $5,000,000.00! Also shown was the famous 1913 Liberty Head Nickel worth over $5,000,000.00, of which only FIVE are known to exist! Another treasure exhibited at a Las Vegas coin and currency show was a rare 1943 bronze Lincoln Penny worth over $250,000.00!

While it would be great to find a few million dollar rarities resting comfortably in those boxes from grandpa stacked in your garage, but what you will more likely find are Morgan dollars, Peace dollars and a lot of silver coins, nickels and pennies he picked out of the change.

The loose change is referred to as “junk silver” and are used to store the precious metal away for a rainy day.  A mere half dollar dated 1964 or earlier is trading at over $4.00, a quarter at over $2.00 and a silver dime at over $.80.  So if you discovered $400.00 face value in junk change in the coffee can, you’d have well over $3,200.00!

Your silver dollars could trade at $12.00 to $20.00 each to as much as $300.00 and up, depending on condition and rarity of the date.

The main attraction to holding gold is that it historically retains its purchasing power versus the declining purchase power of our paper dollar. Your great great uncle could have purchased a very nice suit with the newly minted 1924 $20.00 Saint Gauden’s gold coin.  Today, you can still obtain a beautifully tailored suit with this same gold coin!  A typical $20.00 Liberty Head or Saint Gauden’s gold coin will bring up to $1,100.00 to $3,000.00 and up, depending on condition and mintage survival of the date.

Don’t overlook that junk drawer with old jewelry, broken or unused gold chains and rings, tokens, medals and old notes and paper money.  It can be used to trade into gold, silver or just turned into spending money. You can also buy and sell $500.00 and $1000.00 bills, educational notes and gold certificates.

Chances are there are some foreign or world coins and currency in those boxes and they could be worth money, too!  You never know, so check it out by getting a free appraisal at a coin show where you will most likely to get your best prices paid for your attic treasures.

Visitors quickly discover these gatherings to be a competitive marketplace with over 35 numismatic, jewelry and collectible professionals, from Nevada and Arizona, but as far away as California, Utah, Washington, Idaho and New Mexico. Dealers are prepared to buy, sell or appraise US and world coins, stamps, jewelry, gold, silver, sterling flatware, old paper money and other small collectibles.
Valentine’s Day shoppers will notice substantial discounts from retail pricing on amazing fine jewelry hot off the jeweler’s bench to interesting and unusual vintage collectibles. Coin collecting supplies, yellow diamonds, commemorative coins, proof coin sets, medieval coins, gemstones, handmade silver art bars will be showcased and available for purchase at the expo.
Over $5,000,000 worth of rare coins and jewelry will be exhibited, including 1893-S silver dollar, 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar, rare Civil War currency, a heart shaped diamond, gold nuggets, vintage silver items, Victorian tokens, ancient Greek and Roman coins, rare no heat sapphires, GIA certified diamonds and new fine jewelry.

This twice a year event is a tremendous opportunity for everyone to learn about coin, currency and stamp collecting and the history of money. And it's a great time to clean out the attic and turn your old money into new money.
